I have a mini pro oil fired evaporator. Had for four years with no issues. Initial set-up by Laperir and it has been turn key as far as the Carlin oil burner until today. Was going for the test fire with water today and would get fire then would shut-down and eventually lock out. Smoke coming out between the flue pan and finish pan. So I tore it apart checked the flame sensor, was clean took the igniter out etc cleaned the nozzle and no luck same thing lights but shuts down. Also checked my oil supply and all good there. The dealer set me up with a 1.00 60 degree nozzle that has worked fine. I happened to have a 1.5 gallon 45 and installed that just to see if it would make a difference. It fired and kept running I boiled for about 45 minutes and it kept running however I noted more black smoke out of the stack that I could improve by adjusting the air intake also the boil seemed more violent for lack of a better word not sure it that was in my head but I was hearing sounds I normally do not. At this point I am planning on getting a new nozzle the 1.00 60 degree to see if that may have been the issue all along. Anyone have any ideas, should I call in a pro at this point? I was pretty happy that I was able to break it down and put it back together etc and the burner is pretty simple really. Don't know if a furnace company can test things that I cannot or if they will look at it and not know where to begin. Any help would be appreciated. Almost like it is starved for air but not sure how it could be stack wide open and nothing changed. ????

Update, made it to the depot today and they had the right size or the original 1.00 60 degree A. Changed out the nozzle 1.5 and loaded up the rig with water and fired her up. Seemed a little rough at start up but may have been the air working to the nozzle after tube was drained. It found its level and ran well for a half hour, about all the oil I want to use boiling water. Fingers crossed that the nozzle was just clogged or junk or other. Hopefully that is the most drama I will have this season. I may test her one more time maybe on tapping day if I get a chance just to be sure. Also all of the strange sounds and shaking went away. I have certainly confirmed that the rig likes the 1.00 nozzle if nothing else. Still willing to take any advice from the oil guys on this one just wanted to update. Also on a side note anyone in NH know a tech that works in the maple industry and can trouble shoot these rigs. Maybe any furnace tech would be ok just thought I would see if there is a guru out there that will travel for cash:lol:
Oil burners are the same regardless of their use as far as how they work. So any burner technician should be able to work on them to get it running. What the heating guys usually aren’t good at is getting them set up properly for maximizing heat and the spread of heat for evaporator use. So if it quits running again and you are caught, don’t be afraid to reach out to someone locally who works on burners to help you get up and running. You just may need to do some more adjusting afterwards for maximum heat for your evaporator.

Thank you for the response. Good to know if I get in a bind I can go with a local heat company that works on burners. Hopefully, fingers crossed I will be good. I certainly like to be able to trouble shoot on my own and I learned a lot about the burner this last go around but I know my limitations. As you know we all have to know a little bit about just about everything in sugaring. Much appreciated.
