I’ve been wood fired for the last 21years. I’m now deciding I’m tired and too busy to cut firewood and to pay my hired help to cut wood I might as well just burn oil.

I picked up a Carlin 701 crd and Holly cow it’s a beast. It has two nozzles for high and low fire and I’m pretty comfortable getting it operational as I’m sure it will need some going through.

My arch is a classic leader wood fired 30”x8’ with drop flies and I will be making a plate to replace my doors that I will mount the gun to. The gun is pretty heavy so I plan to make some sort of leg to help hold the gun up rather than hanging all the weight right off the door.

Does anyone have experience with this gun?
Does anyone know what gph I will need to fire my arch size? Leader says 7gph but it seems all over the place when I try to dig into it.
What angle and is it a hollow or solid flame nozel.

Any other input on what I’m trying to do?

I have a 701 on my 3x12. I run 2-5.5 gph 80° hollow nozzles. About 125 psi. Nozzles are rated at 100 psi. So I’m actually burning a little over 12 gph. I built my arch. Tried several nozzle combinations to get boil like I wanted it. Had to lower pressure and bigger nozzles to get front pan to boil good. I do not run a barometric damper. Stack runs low 600s Fahrenheit I would think you will have to dial a 701 down pretty low to work in your size rig.

We run a Becket burner. 4.5gpm hollow 45 degree nozzle on our 30x8. Stack length arch/pan design all change how things burn. Nozzles are cheap enough buying several to try is what we did.

that is a big burner for your evaporator, but it will work when turned way down.

For the money I would highly recommend you call CDL service in St. Albans. Tell them what you have going on and specifically request they schedule Richard. All of their service crew is great, but you will want Richard for this.

As others have said that is a big burner. My rig is 24"x8. I built something very similar. Made a pressure fuel tank and mix with compressed air at the double Venturi fuel nozzle. I burn filtered used veggie oil at 50c and 70psi. I have burned heating oil and even used motor oil. No need to pre heat those. I exclusively use the veggie oil now. burns about 3.2 gallons an hour. I can and do still run wood every morning for start up. I like the quiet crackle and hint of smoke as I enjoy my first coffee.
Only have 500 taps.
