Spout sanitation

For several years i've been under the impression that spouts, regardless of type, were only good for 6 weeks. After that the taphole/spout would develop unwanted bacteria. Now i'm hearing from a few producers that the '6 week rule' is no longer applicable with good vacuum. Can anyone shed any light on this ?
