I am thinking of buying some plastic and glass jars this year to bottle my syrup. Are they fine to use right out of the box? No need to sanitize them?

I asked this very question of our Director of food safety in the Dept. of Ag one year. His reply was, "use them directly from the box, your more likely to introduce mold or bacteria by washing". He did say if your going to wash use the sanitiing cycle on a dishwasher, but hand washing is not recommended.

Sanitizing is generally not necessary (unless indicated elsewise by the manufacturer), however you should ALWAYS invert the bottles (or eyeball them if glass) before filling. Storage of empty containers in a pest-free environment is essential.

FYI - I think that the last few cases of glass bottles I bought came already inverted in the box.
I don't sanitize my bottles before filling. They go right into the oven or steamer pot to pre-heat before filling.

I've always used glass bottles and they've always been packed upside down in the cartons.
I've never wash them. Not sure what would I use for soap and how well could I rinse - dry.
Pretty sure bottles are made with extreme heat, so should be sterile coming out of the bottle plant.
Laying the bottle on it's side for a bit after filling and sealing...if syrup is 185-190° they will be sterilized.
Dr Tim said..."always invert the bottle before filling" What he forgot to say was "If a roach falls out....move on to another bottle!" <grin>
Good luck this year

Thanks for the replys. Sounds like I will be fine. Although my friend just gave me a bunch of used mason jars. So I might go that route again.
