the hydrometer has fixed red line and refrence marksand you need to allow for the temp. of your syrup to be accurate . The Hydrothermoeter has a Thermometer inside of the glass tube that compensates for the temp. of the syrup.

Any of the equipment supplers should have both. With a hydrotherm you can check at any temp. However there is no way to tell if they are correct. Better way to explain is beacuse of the way they work they really can't be tested. You can check it against your hydrometer at a known temp say 211 F. They are not calibrated to accurately tell if you are 1 brix over or .5 brix.
Our extension specialist will test hydrometers for producers but not hydrotherms.
We do have one to do a quick check on syrup that is not at 211 or 60. You have to wait for the thermometer to get adjusted to the temp which can take several minutes. Another tool to have but should not be your only method.

to put it a little more directly, you cannot get a Hydrotherm that is certified accuracte.
I used one last year and loved it, that is until I started to note crystals in some bottles and mould in others. This year I ordered an accu-cup from the hosts of this site. Got the digital thermometer in it. Looks good. Several members here have used them and I have not heard anything but praise for it.
