I went and looked at a 4x14 evaporator this morning with a ss hood and pre heater on a 7 ft flue pan. The flue pan is tin and don't know if it leaks, the 7 ft front pan is shot. The arch needs a little work, everything is as is for 600.00. I was told the evaporator has been sitting for 8 to 10 years. I guess I will take the chance and see what happens. I will change it to oil and put 2 afg beckett oil burners on it. It will probably use 4 boxes of ceramic blanket. :)
Dang Brian keep it up and you'll be up there with Glen. He hears about this he'll proberly start worrying about competition.
Good luck with all the parts.
Take care
Can't go wrong. Preheater and hood are worth more than that.

Brian,
Watch the maple news, Bascoms, Maple digest and other places and you could probably find a nice set of 4x14 pans for a good price as that is a pretty popular size. I guess if worse come to worse, you could get a set of 4x12 pans if you found a good set and couldn't find a set of 4x14's and block off the last two feet of the arch with a steel plate until you could find a set of 4x14's.

Brandon that was what I was thinking. I could even shorten the arch 2 ft if I have to. I might use the flue pan IF it is any good and put A 5 ft ss front pan on and go withit next year. Then keep looking for an ss fiue pan.
Bascoms have 4x5 ss front pan for 600.00.

Hey Brian- with all that vacume you will need a bigun, I was looking at a 4x4 stainless suryp pan last weekend that could be had for around $350 looked good to me but I am no pro.....If you want it let me know, a 7' flu pan and a 7' syrup pan, wonder how that would work? most of the set ups I have seen have a 10' flue pan... Good luck, Parker

Thanks Parker, I wish I knew what size flue pan I was going to end up with. That would make it easer to know what to get for a front pan. I hope to find A 7 ft ss flue pan so the hood and pre-heater could be used.

Brian,
Since you are going bigger, mapleman may want your 2.5 x 8 since he is wanting to go to oil and yours will give him more evaporator rate and he won't have to convert it to oil.
By the way, what kind of evap rate do you get on your evaporator??

Thanks but nope... I'm not going over 350 taps,so I'll just tweak "Alice" to her absolute max "that I can affored" want to get her up to 55gph.. then I'll be happy.
Good luck Brian :)

Well been busy, I sold the arch front out of that 4x14 for 300.00 and am buying a 4x12 oil fired arch for 1000.00 and found a set of pans with an extra syrup pan for 3600.00 .I think A friend of mine is going to buy my 2 1/2 x 8 for 2000.00. Well I hope it all goes together before next spring or Glenn Goodrich is going to have some extra sap!!

FM Mason, I saw your post, but I like oil fired. The arch I am buying has a new carlin oil burner on it. The fire is out with a flick of a switch. thank you for the thought.

Oil is good Brian , as far as having a 7' syrup pan on a evaporator, I know every extra inch of pan gives you a little more evaporation , but since 80% of the evaporation takes place in the flue pan , wouldn't you be much better off with a 10 or 11' flue pan and much smaller syrup pan.Even with the preheater and hood on the 7' flue pan , any flue pan larger than 7' would give you more GPH than the one with the hood and preheater.?
Easy for me to say when I'm not cutting the check right.

FM Mason, This unit should evaporate at 135 gph with a 7 ft flue pan and 5 ft front pan. That should work and give me more time to walk my lines and keep the tanks alittle cleaner. The hood and pre-heater I have now and that will give me hot water in the sugar shack. The pans are in the right price range, but yes you are right the bigger the flue pan the faster the evaporation rate.

You should get more than135 gph. I have a 3'X12' wood fired with a 8' flue pan and I get 140 gph. With a hood and pre heater on a 4'X12' you should easilly get 180 gph and handle about 1300 taps
