Upgraded from a simple cinder block unit. Took a 500 gallon propane tank, cut off one end and installed a sliding door. Started with a 6" chimney and found that the huge fire inside couldn't vent up the pipe fast enough and had to cut it off and weld a 10". Runs much smoother. 1-1/2" solid square steel grate as my 1/2" grate warped badly. Using pallet wood I get for free for the fuel. Takes an hour to boil down 10 gallons and that includes pouring freezing sap in as the level drops. Holds 40 gallons. Installed a heat barrier on the west side so at the final stages I can take samples and stir without bursting into flames. Pictures to follow as soon as I figure out how to post......
