Why does CDL put 2 holes in the float box???

Putting this evaporator together i just bought and i cannot find any information on why CDL put a second hole in the front of the float box and about 2 inches below the sap intake. The sap inlet hole (At the back of the box) has the bigger pipe welded on it for the reverse flow pipe, the second hole does not. Since is a reverse flow machine so it doesn't make sense that this is in it, seems like it would defeat the purpose?? For some reason it isnt letting me upload pictures...

Is it the one that gets capped and only used when you switch sides? Which Float box? Rear or front?

It’s definitely not for the reverse flow as it is in line with the flues. There is an 8 inch stainless pipe I would use to use the evaporator on one side then if I want to use the other side I take the 8” pipe off.

There is only one float box on the rear pan, on the back side passenger side of you are look at it. Then obviously 2 float boxes on the finishing pan

Maybe it is to help the float regulate to the true depth in the flue pan and not be affected by the boiling.

Yes. The hole between the flue pan and float box that you circled in your photo is to allow the level in the float box to represent the level in the pan.

it is for the depth of the liquid the float sits on. there should be a divider in the center though.

Okay that makes sense but wasn’t sure how the new sap coming in doesnt mix with the stuff already boiling. Previous owner never had a divider. Should I make something and put one in?

What size and type of evaporator is this pan on? Why is a divider necessary? The incoming sap is going to go where you want it.... right?

A divider prevents the mixing of partially boiler sap with raw sat going in. Also with a larger capacity evaporator it prevents the float from being drawn down because the sap is going into the evaporator. I'm not sure on smaller units if drawdown with be an issue. I believe it would be on mine.

This is a 2 x 6 evaporator 4 foot back pan, the inlet of the sap to the pan is right next to the in let of preheater on one side of the float box. and the other one is in the middle of where the float is. There would be room for a divider

I wouldn't add a divider though if it did not come with one. I would think that with a 2x6 you would be just fine
