I have been using a cinder block arch with pans for several years. I just slide a block in and out to add wood. I am looking to rig up a door but I have no welding skills. Thought about buying a cast iron stove door but worried this will get too hot. This is a very resourceful group...any suggestions?

if you are only looking for a door the size of a cinder block. Maybe buy one of those charcoal briquette starters and then cut it up the side opposite the handle and hammer it flat. That would get you a door, a heat shield and a handle. that's just an out of the box thought. you would have to measure to make sure it would cover your opening, but it could be made with a pair of tin snips and some determination.

The cast iron door would work all you would need to do is attach some ceramic insulation blanket material on the inside of the door. This would help keep the outside of the door from getting extremely hot. several layers of one inch or two layers of the two inch blanket aught to do the trick.

You could always get a couple of these if you wanted your door to be a real conversation piece. :D
