Mason drop tube arch bricking

Have a drop tube pan built and was just wondering how to brick the arch for it? Do I brick right up to the bottom of pan to force all the heat through the tubes of do I leave some space underneath the pan?

1 left about 1/2” under mine. That pan would really boil. Mine was a 2x6

Did you leave 1/2 inch on the sides too or just on the bottom?

I used full 2” thick bricks. On the sides I had I brick thickness so there was some space there. I found a round 3” nylon bristle brush with a long wire handle made for cleaning pellet stoves worked well for cleaning the soot from inside the tubes.
