View Full Version : Orlon filter - dumb question

I can't remember which side of my orlon filter is the outside and which is the inside. One side is stiffer/harder, the other is softer. Dumb question, I know, but last time I filtered the syrup in the bottle still looked pretty cloudy, so either my filter has kicked the bucket after a few years of use, or (hopefully) I'm using it the wrong way round.
Thanks,

I always mark the corner with a permanent marker up or top. Sounds like it's about time to get a new filter sheet.
I'm not sure if there is an inner or outer side to orlon. I do know that they degrade from use. I use mine around six times and then discard. Should clarify that these are Orlon pre filters, used over a felt filter.

Sorry, I mean the synthetic felt filter, not the pre-filters.

My mistake! Does anyone know for sure if orlon cone filters have a flow direction. Looking at the prefilters that I have I would guess not as the material appears identical from either side but would like to know for certain!

There's no flow direction. I have always used seams out as they come from the store, but this year I somehow got them spun around putting them in the Optimizers. I didn't realize my mistake until I was cleaning them that night. I've left them going in that direction and have found no difference in performance or results in all the boils since.
