View Full Version : Which Pump to buy?

I've got an older Memtek RO system that was previously converted from a 4x21" membrane to a 4x40" membrane. The original pump can supply 1.8gpm to the system, which is far less than the 4x40" membrane can handle. The specs on my membrane say is can handle 12gpm @100psi, so I'd like to increase the flow closer to that limit.

My question is for those folks running a 4x40 system, what is the brand, model & hp of the pump your system has and how much throughput are you getting?

3/4HP Motor and a 265gph Procon will be perfect for 1 4x40.

I've been doing some research on the Procon pumps and am thinking of getting the Procon Series 6 pump, which would give me up to 660gph. Our element is a DOW Filmtec XLE-4040. The spec sheet says it can handle 14gpm, so it should be able to handle the flowrate from a Procon series 6 pump....unless I'm not looking at something correctly? I've attached pics of the pump and RO element specs below.

Yes that will work but you will need a canister with 3/4 inch openings or you will have pressure problems, 2 4inch membranes in parallel works great with that pump

The pump would work but definitely overkill for a single 4x40. As mention 265gpm procon is plenty or even a 330 as cost is about the same. I’m running three 4x40 membranes in series with a procon 330gpm.

Thanks for the information. I've actually got a second 4x40 membrane that I was thinking of incorporating when I modify this RO. Do you think I'd be better off going with the Series 5 300 and put the membranes in series or go with the Series 6 and have them in parallel?

I know that comes down to a personal choice on whether I want high concentration or more throughput. My first thought is to go for parallel because I'm really tired of listening to this RO chugging away the entire time I'm boiling and quicker throughput would shorten the processing time. But I am curious to hear more about putting them in series and what other mods I'd have to do to accomplish that change?
