View Full Version : RO membrane moldy in fridge - salvageable?

Built a homemade version of an RO, very similar to an RO Bucket last year. Flushed the membrane and stored in the refrigerator. Found some mold on the bottom when I pulled it out of the fridge this year. Has anyone had any luck cleaning one that this happened to, or should I just chalk it up as a learning experience and buy a new membrane?

Thank you

Not wanting an off flavor in the finished product is a good enough reason to replace the membrane.

Get a new membrane. Then when the season ends do a full wash. First a cold permeate rinse, then a warm soap wash, a rinse, then an acid wash, followed by a long rinse. Then either store it in a preservative or use it every 4-6 weeks on water only and store again.

Thank you. Was just a little blue spot on the bottom and I wasn't sure if an acid wash would save it or not. Bascomms has the wash, acid and preservative, but only in 1 gallon / 1 lb quantities. More than I really need for my little one and the cost of those was more than the cost of my replacement membrane. They just started selling CDL's little hobby RO though so maybe they'll get smaller quantities for the folks that buy that. Kinda seems silly to buy a 1lb of preservative when I just need 1 tsp and I'm assuming that as a chemical, it has a shelf life of some sort.
