Tapping into dark wood...

So we'll be using a existing sugarbush with existing mainline and laterals. If when tipping, we don't hit clean white wood, do we leave that hole open while looking for a better place to tap?

Yes, just pick another spot, do not try to plug the hole, let the tree plug it.
