Teflon tape is best for food applications.

Note that DWV PVC is technically NOT food-grade or water potable. You can get white Sch 40 water potable PVC (most is nowadays). Grey, black or colored PVC often is not. Clear PVC is almost always water potable, as is CVPC. If it is NSF approved, it is good to go.

Yes, use teflon tape, but be careful not to screw it in or on too tight. The teflon reduces the friction and you can actually end up over stressing the fitting and have a leak. It's best to just tighten moderately and try it, if a leak develops turn it 1 more turn and try again.
