I'm running (was running) a NGMP 100STDRO single 4x40 RO. A few minutes after startup yesterday, the procon stopped pumping. Pressure (190psi) fell to zero, no concentrate or permeate. Motor was running as normal. Thee was no noise or warning, it just stoped pumping. The pump was ice cold, and was working fine until the moment it stopped. I was fixing a leak on the concentrate recirc line back to the holding tank when it stopped. The unit is just over 1 year old. The sap was at an underwhelming 1%, so I'm not running without an RO (no doubt my season is over now). I'll be in contact with NGMP Monday, but just curious about what could have happened.

Probably the impeller broke. I’ve had a few do that before I changed to a better pump. You can get a rebuild kit for them for about 50 bucks if I recall, easy fix.

It is guessed that my pump ran dry at some point and the vanes were damaged or broken. This could have jammed the impeller and caused the key to shear, thus stopping the pump. Without disassembly of the pump, we can't be sure. But, I am interested in a possible rebuild, so I will look into that, and will also take a look inside the pump.

There could have been a number of reasons for the pump running dry; empty feed tank, unsecured hose falling out of the feed tank, suction holding the open end of the feed line to the bottom or side of the feed tank. I don't recall the first two occurring, but the hose could have stuck to the tank bottom/wall, or even curled so that end was not under the sap level. We do know that the unit never froze, and that the pre-filter has been changed before every rinse cycle, so not too likely a dirty filter blocked the flow.

My current setup protects much more against running dry, for whatever reason, but early on it was possible, particularly if I was away from the unit for any length of time.

What would be a better pump?

I have a Goulds Booster Pump
10GBC15, fantastic high pressure pump.

I've always liked Goulds pumps.

Can I ask what pressure you get with that Goulds 10 pump? I have a Goulds 7 and cant really run it more than about 210psi.

Thanks!

Removed the pump. The drive shaft sheared off, probably due to broken vain jamming the impeller. This is a Series 5 pump, SS with 1/2' fittings. The best price I've found on a rebuild kit is $95 from EDCO, which is actually the same price they charge to rebuild the pump if you send it to them. So I may just send it in. If anyone knows of a better deal, let me know.
