View Full Version : RO flush too weak?

Advised to dilute 50ml Caustic Soda into 5L/1G water, then add (gradually) to 50L/10G, I decided to be cautious and go with 30ml instead as my membranes were very new and had only been doing RO runs for a few days...I thought I had a little grace...
I managed a full cleaning cycle, and as the pH was returning to normal - I ran out of water (I'm deep in the wild, no potable water supply) to finish the flush.
Managed 30L of desired 50 before I ran out.

I HAD previously blocked the pre-filter in the RO unit (PRF-RO/Merlin) because I'd not installed a pre-RO sediment filter - on replacing that I went into a cleaning cycle, and once I began to RO again, the TDS of the permeate went from 002 to 030, then to 048 over an hour, and the total general flow rate had dropped to under half.

Might the membranes still be partially clogged?
Any visual checks?
A warm water 50ml caustic mix flushed 'till pH returns to normal?

I am right on the end of my season, not sure it will be worth a new membrane.

Any suggestions would be great, as well as anything motivational, as this season has been one of the steepest learning curves for me - with only 2 litres produced so far (Little victories!!)

Did you measure the pH? It sounds like you did. RO membranes are very sensitive to pH and temperature. As a general rule the pH should be 12 or less during cleaning and the temperature below 114F depending on the type membrane. It sounds like the membrane has been damaged and is passing TDS but who knows?
