Im gonna boil off probably 20-30 gallons tomorrow and was wondering when i filter it off before bringing it to stove top do i run it through the orlon cone or is that for when after its done on the stove and going in to the jars? I dont wanna lose a bunch of syrup by the filter absorbing it so just wondering the best time

When niter is heavy for us and there's lots of "schmutz" in the near syrup in the evaporator I sometimes will filter from the evaporator with a thin prefilter that catches a lot of the big stuff and some of the niter too. This is when I will finish (boil some more) on propane. You CAN use the heavy orlon (or felt) filter right off the evaporator, and you're right it does hold some but when the syrup is real hot it don't hold that much really. Up to you. Good luck.

I would prefilter off the evaporator, and wait and filter using the orlon filter when you're ready to bottle.
