So got my new rig built just in time. I will make this post simple but wanted you all to see what I have been up to in between snowflakes.
Stats:
2x8 (3ft front/5ft rear drop flue)
Thor Evaporators Pans
7” deep flues with drain manifold
Reversing front pan, cross flow with center drain
Arch was built from 3inX3inX1/4in angle iron
3 inches of 8lbs ceramic insulation
Adjustable feet
Aluminum diamond plate salvaged from old fire truck
Homemade base stack
Carlin burner using 1 part waste oil : 2 parts #2 diesel

Happy to answer any questions you may have. A little tiring typing on the phone but I am amazed at how quickly oil reaches a boil. I’m hoping for about 40-50gal per hour evaporation rate

Now for the good stuff

That is a sweet looking arch and evaporator. have a grand time with it. You have done a very nice job with the build.

I few on this thread say it is illegal in VT to use waste oil to make syrup. http://mapletrader.com/community/showthread.php?3364-waste-oil-and-alternative-fuels

you're gonna love your Thor pans! i got a very similar set this year form them, but in a 2.5 x 8, however i bought the arch with it. my first boil was a week ago today, we got the rig to boil 65 gph without pushing it as it was our first boil on it. have fun with your rig! you did a great job in the arch build!!

quick question on the arch build. how did you do your area under the flue pan? Thor's rig, that i got, has 2 baffles/ramps behind the fire box instead of filling that area with sand or what not. i was skeptical of that sort of design, but not anymore.

Haha no. It was 9 degrees the night we put the burner on and my sugarhouse is small and no heat. A good friend helped me put the burner together and it was all used parts

no, i don't have a picture of it at the moment. never thought to take one. next time i take my syrup pans off to clean i'll take a pic and post it. it struck me as an odd design, but also looked as if it would accomplish a similar idea of pushing the flames up into the flues. seems like it might get them "rolling" better than just being flat... idk?

Yes that is something we (guy who designed it) notes when we were test firing in the shop that might. Need the flames to enter flue better. I will no more once I get an accurate boil session
