Started a wash cycle to prepare for the next run. These are new this season Dow XLE’s. Once I started the wash I started doing other things around the yard and in my house and I got distracted on the time. Once I remembered that it was running I ran to the RO to find my cleaning solution to be quite hot, I’m guessing 120-140degrees. It had been running easily an hour and a half. I immediately shut it down and started running permeate through it but I’m guessing I’m screwed. Won’t know for sure until I run sap through it I guess, but this is about to become a $500 mistake that I’ll never make again. I have 300 gallons of sap to run tonight, so we shall see what happens with them. Just so angry at myself!!

I feel for you.... This will be my first year trying RO.... I manage to collect most of the parts used... but not the membranes.... I'm quite scared of messing them up somehow...
Hopefully not to late for you... but this makes me think that having a high temperature cutout wired into the system might be a good addition....

I say, try to use it today and check the performance. 120-140 is just a guess? It might have been just 115 which is good. They may not be hurt at all. What temperatures does the mfr state for max? You should realize that # will still have a margin of safety built in.
Good luck!

For future reference, (I bet you already decided this), don't leave the RO unattended for too long. If you have a smart phone, set a reminder that will remind you. The older I get the more I use things to remind me.

It was a complete guess Dave....MFG says 113 degrees max operating temperature. Lets hope they have a +- 10 degree buffer on them and I am ok.

I would bet on the side of you being OK. I think there is quite a buffer built in. The good news is you will know either way shortly,

I don't think that you hurt them at all. The manufacturers use a high temp cut off switch to turn the RO off when the optimum temp for cleaning is passed. On my RO it's 43*C which is 109*F. The optimum temp for sodium hydroxide RO soap is about 105*F. Exceeding that temp decreases the effectiveness of the cleaning solution, not make it more aggressive. The temperature itself may open the pores in the membranes a little bit more than normal but they close back up when they cool down.

I’m sure they are fine. When I installed my high temp cut-off switch a couple years ago I ran a wash just like you and forgot about it. And the switch worked But it cut off at 155 instead of 105. I still have the membrane and it works fine. Never an issue.

Great news....I collected 275 gallons last night and ran it all and my permeate was reading 0%....I freaked out for nothing. On another positive note, after emptying my collection tanks last night I went this morning to change out the batteries for my Shurlfo pumps and they ran like crazy last night. One of my tanks had 200 gallons one other had about 125 and the 3rd smaller bus had 75 gallons, looks like Im going to have a busy night!!
