I'm still a bit of a novice at this, and I am wondering if there's any reason I shouldn't tap a maple that's in about 3 feet of water (ice)? Besides the fact that we'll need a raft to get to get to it in a few days 

If that tree is submerged for very long it will likely die, if it is usually above the water by at least several inches it will likely live. Is it a silver maple, they seem to tolerate water more than reds and lots more than sugar maples.

Yes it is a Silver Maple and there are a lot of them around here submerged right now and I was wondering if it would affect the sugar content. The tree looks healthy for now. We'll see how it goes.
