A few days back I questioned you all about the “tap root myth” and you all confirmed my thoughts. So now I’m wondering, What are other Maple Syrup Myths? I can think of a few, but what have you all heard?

Always tap on the south side of the tree.

Cloudy sap or yellow sap or smelly sap = buddy syrup.
Clear non smelly sap= good non buddy syrup. Expanded flower buds on red and silver maples means its time to pull taps. I always know when its going to run,how long it will and how much it will.

Are you talking about a fully frozen bucket? Or the top 1/3 of a frozen bucket? If the former, I agree. If the latter, my experience, and I think the consensus, is that this is no myth.

The more taps on a tree, the more sap you get!

Soft Maples or Red, Silver Maples are no good for sap production. Only Hard Maple or Sugar Maple should be tapped.

I once put this to the test by taking hydrometer readings on the discarded ice from the top of the bucket. The ice had very minimal sugar content, and the remaining liquid was much higher density.

Using an RO will ruin the taste of your syrup!
