I have almost finished insulating/bricking and am starting to think about building the walls in the arch. My plan is to build the front wall right at the step and the back wall will be about 9" from the flue in the back. My questions are:

1. Should I fill the void between the walls with vermiculite and cap it with durarock/splits?
2. With a 6" flue, how high should I make my walls? I have read that Bill Mason recommends 2" to 2-1/2" from the top of the wall to the bottom of the pan. I've also read that there is a formula that uses the square inches of the flue diameter to determine the size of the opening between the top of the wall and the bottom of the pan. If I'm doing my math right, this tells me the gap should be just under 1-1/4".

Thoughts and comments would be greatly appreciated!
