Snow melt at the base of the tree

To bring up an old question about the donut at the base of the tree . My trees have no snow melt around the base yet so I am think it will be another week for my trees to run .
I remember when I first joined the forum I read some were on this forum that the old timers believed you needed the snow melt around the base for the tree for the tree to start any new news on this

I think it can vary a lot as temps move up and down and around freezing. We have had a lot of cold days with a few mild days mixed in. Had 7 runs so far and there is snow around the trees at this time. Not very deep.

once the snow starts melting away from the base of the tree, the sap will start running stronger! certainly true as far as my observations go.
