Now that I think of it - I know of at least 1 producer who buys sap from a neighbour. I believe his arrangement is 50% finished product to the seller and he keeps 50% for processing it.

Looking forward to my 2nd year of production and at a bit of a crossroads:
Will be expanding my small operation from 77 taps to 180. Last year my wife gave almost all away to family and friends and now the dilemma of how to market in 2022. It is not a large amount to warrant retail and 2ndly there is a lot of maple syrup in our area... a lot. So I might be looking at bulk sales. The only buyer I am aware of is Jakemans (as per website over 200 producers) in Southern Ontario, not sure if they accept new sellers or even the required state (field or filtered) and most importantly, the price.

Limited response to this thread earlier but need to start planning now as to containers, shipping etc so any leads/advice is appreciated.

So if you made 90 gallons on 180 taps you could buy some 5 gallon plastic containers and keep them in a freezer. or buy a couple of 30 gallon ss barrels. I plan on a qt. per tap any thing over that is a bonus, last year we avraged 3.3 gallons per tap.

Before you purchase containers, check with any potential buyers you identify to see if they have specific requirements.

Paul - you'll be surprised how much syrup you can sell through family, friends and acquaintances without a lot of effort. Even if you're located a half mile up the road from the largest producer in the province, people will often prefer to buy from someone they know personally.

I have no plans to sell any syrup, but I have neighbour’s lined up to acquire some if I have extra.
