What do yall think about these buckets I got them for free with the taps.. are they the nasty most aren't bad dirty wise. I'm probably going to just get bag liners. 500 for 40 bucks 12 inches by 18. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200127/ebc5e3109437e3df0c37d14f7fcb5a8a.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200127/bd27a140ed1ed03ff71fcf620abcef96.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200127/c63213a904e83dc1d92f797fabe8a4e5.jpg

I think the buckets would probably be okay, but would definitely get some new taps. I would just go with "disposable" taps; they're cheap.

I agree. They look like 4 gal buckets? If all the buckets look like those, that was a good deal.

Nice shiny bottoms = ternplate = lead. Use bag liners.

Look at them again -- shiny maybe isn't the best way to say it I guess...maybe "different" is a better way to describe it. The bottom is clearly a very different composition than the sides. When the sides and the bottom look very different (or if the bottom has been painted) like that, it is an almost certainty that the bottom is terneplate (sheet metal with an alloy coating of 10-20% tin and 80-90% lead). The sides are clearly galvanized (which for that age also contains lead to improve fluidity of the coating, but is mostly zinc). In any case, maple sap, which is often slightly acidic, will leach lead out of the buckets and accumulate in the sap, then be concentrated by boiling.

Hard to tell in the photos, but were the bottoms (inside) painted at one time? That's also a pretty sure sign they are terneplate. In either case...use a bag liner on any of these buckets or get some good-grade plastic buckets.

I just shot a wheeling bucket of mine with an Xrf( x ray florescence) inside outside, no lead detected except for one seam that had an old soldered repair. The other crimped side showed no lead detected. Bottom no lead inside or out. I think wheeling made those same buckets for leader. I have shot all my buckets in the past and stopped using one type that had lead in the bottoms and seams. They looked completely different than those pictured by the o.p. I had our company's lead risk assesor/ building inspector do this for me.

Galvanized. It's zinc. The only way you get lead in those buckets is when some old fool soldered them. It's easy to spot, and you'll find one or two in every stack of buckets. Sort 'em out and throw them in the recycle bin. The rest are fine. Terne plate is a smooth even gray with none of that galvanized crystal look.

They are just galvanized. The outside of the bottom is the same as the rest but when I rub the inside with my fingers and smell them they have a metalic smell so I bought 50 plastic hanger bags for 15 bucks I'm just going to line them so I dont end up with metalic taste.
