buying sap

I'm just curious. I'm sure there are several producers out there that buy sap. My question is how is sap bought? By the gallon or maybe sugar content. How much is usually paided for sap?

nymapleman- The way I understand it you pay per gal dependent on sugar content of the sap. I have a sheet with it spelled out by tenths of a percent. 2007 list, for example 1.5% sap delivered to the sugarhouse .10 per gal 2%-.19 3%-.32 4%-.46 The price is less Pickup 2%-.13 Probly a large producer in your area could give you current sap prices each year. most everybody in this area pays.25 to .28 cents per gallon based on 2.5 sugar content. It goes up or down from there based on a penny per point for sugar content. Some pay a additional.03 per gallon for delivery. I hope this helps

I would like to pay those prices!!! Last year I paid more than a penny a point.For example, 2.5% sap was worth 25 cents +. Depending on the quality of the sap, maybe even more! To find the true value of sap, use the rule of 86 and divide the bulk price of syrup by that number.
So.... If sap is 2.5% and bulk price of MA is $2.00 a pound.......
2.5/86 =34.4 gallons for a gallon of syrup $22.00/34.4 = .63 cents per gallon of sap. I then divide that by 60% which gives me .25 per gallon!! I figure with expenses and all I can still put some $ in my pocket. I sell most of my syrup bulk so this is what works for me. I will pay a little extra if the sap is brought in the same day that it ran....kinda like a quality premium. Obviously, the more retail I do the more money I make!!

The standard here in NH for 2.5% in the late 70's was .25cents per gallon. There is a publication of this in the maple digest about Febuary of every year. With the price of gas being about $3.12 now I am offering people that haul sap to me .35cents/gal for 2.5%

The way you do it Mike is the way I used to. It is the most fair way for everybody. The way most the buyers in this area (and you know who I mean) do it this way. When you use the system that goes by a penny a point you screw your sap producer over 2.5 percent and and you screw yourself under 2.5 percent. It just seems that they don't want to do the math and a penny a point is easier. If I was the sap roducer I would certainly like to do the penny a point, because how much sap usually is higher than 2.5 percent. Also they don't compensate for bad sap so its a win, win for the sap producer.

.20 cents/gallon is the standard around here. We only buy from one sap producer but keeping at .20 from him guarentees a baseline regardless of the sugar content. We also gather the sap from the collection tank sometimes. Sometimes he brings it to us depending on how busy everyone is. We try to help each other.

Dear Nymapleman This is my first time to reply to anyone so if I do it wrong I will try again sometime. We buy sap from a few smaller sugar makers and we have 2 ways of doing this. The old way is for every 100 gals of sap you give them 1 gal of syrup. A newer way is by sugar content which takes alittle more work. From 1.50 S.C to 5.50 per gal you pick up or they deliver. We start out with a base from the Maple Syrup Digest and then adjust it to our fuel prices. If you would like alittle more detail let me know.
