My town clerk just informed me that I don't have to get a permit and I won't be taxed on a 10' by 10' out building on my property so that is all I need to know to realize I need to make this project a minimalist one! So I wonder how well a half pint will fit in a sugarhouse of that size. I was debating retrofitting my 24'x48' garage but I'm over that idea.

I had the same situation. Ended up 8x10 because it was more cost effective material wise. We had a 2x3 and now a 2x6. Both fit, but don't count on room for a bunch of visitors! The rest of my tanks/processing equipment is in the garage, the shack is evaporator only.

We are moving into my garage next year I think. That said, my building might be for sale. It would require a trailer and some work to transport.

I would love to see a picture.

Shirefisher, dont get stuck on the 10x10. Most building codes are based on square footage and I expect the actual rule is 100 sq ft so 8x12 would work or any other rectangle that is under 100!

We have a mini pro that is about 2 x8. We use for demo purposes so wanted side exposed so people could see. Built a 5x12 shed, so width wise gives us about 2' to go behind, allows large doors to close in front when not in use. On the length, the stack is about 16" off the wall and at other end room enough to stack up a wood pile that keeps it going for a day.

Thank you I'm now brainstorming about the idea of an overhang in the front with 2 barn doors that would open and be the "walls" for the sides of the overhanging "porch". This would give me some more room when in operation....Then it would be a 10'x14' (10'x10'+4')....ish... or it could be (12'x8'+4')...ish...

Keep in mind though, you'll want the doors closed during boiling for best evap, steam evacuation, ect.

I have been in the current use program since 2004. No building permit is needed for the sugar house and the sugar house and other out building related to sugaring are exempt from taxes.

Build your sugar house a large as you can afford. They get awful small as you add more taps, filter press, caner, a RO, barrels and the list goes on.

So I'm thinking of upping the hobby maple game and getting a bid for a 10x10 or 12 x8 with an extended porch overhang with the doors as extended walls and a dairy curtain for the front door... the extension would be for visitors and if room is needed... and post and beam it... like my garage. I feel confident I could make it work and it would be awesome. I have spent some time living/working on boats so I have some romantic dreams of small spaces....

The inside floor space for my shack (http://mapletrader.com/community/showthread.php?31100-The-Log-Sugar-Shack) is 10x10 and it works fine with my 2x4 pan.

Being small helped minimize how the building codes and zoning effected the cost.

I just uncovered what is left of my concrete pad where my fire wood sits. There is 16x24 feet of cement pad just waiting for a sugar shack to be built. Not to mention I found some timber left over from my post and beam garage. And some roofing. I think I'll have a decent plan once I move my firewood around. The build will be to the left....
20056 my garage wants a mini me....sugar shack. Reddorakeen I love the look of your sugar house.

IMO 10x10 is too small even for a half pint. Go with as big a building as you can.
And even the, chances are, in a year or two you will wish you had gone bigger.

I say build what you want and ask for forgiveness later. I doubt that you will have much of an issue anyway, hard to imagine that anyone would bother you too much over it. 16x16 with an 8' overhang for wood/sap storage. My sugar house is 20x36 and it was too small the day I moved into it.

I'm in a 10x20 canopy with a 2x4 and a steam hood and plenty of ventilation and it still gets moist. A 10x10 space for your 2x4 isn't probably going to work.2005720058

Right you all are. My thought is keep the boiling in the small space with it in mind I got a 24x 48 foot garage parked right next door!
