Do I need filter paper just to test run a filter press? I just want to run some water though it to see how it runs before I sell it.
What kind of pressure shoule I look for with a orbendorfer 5970 pump and a 7" long stack press?

I would suggest the papers. I don't think it would hold shelled corn let alone water with out the papers.
My two cents.

paper or no paper, you won't get much pressure with just water

I'd have to agree with maplehound....probably won't get enough to make the gauge read anything. But if you have a valve on the outlet of the press you could slowly close it and see if the pump will build up pressure. But don't close it too much!!! If the gauge reaches 80 pounds that's enough.

Don't get me wrong, But isn't high pressure a bad thing with a filter press. When I run mine and the papers are new and the syrup is hot I get around 10-12 psi. I know its time to change the papers when it get up to 60-70 psi.At the end of the day usually last drawoff I have to open the bypass valve and let the hot sryup warm things up before I can run it through my press. I also know when I have a problem if my press suddenly drops, ie blown paper. Just my thinking.

Pete, I agree with you 100%. It just sounded to me like he wanted to see how well the pump would work. If for some reason the pump will only build 20 psi, then he would have to price accordingly.

Yes, I just want to see how the pump and the press works.
