I am in Eastern Ontario and this has been a very late season for us. I am currently still collecting and boiling sap and I am curious about pulling my spiles. We are not due for any negative temperatures for at least 2 more nights. I would like to collect more sap if possible but I don’t want to push it too late knowing the bitter buddy sap is coming. . Question - can sap turn buddy even after a night of negative temperatures?

When I hear the peepers I pull the plug. They have been accurate to the day for the last 18 years.

Hi Mark.. are you referring to the crickets and frogs?

The frogs. They start a chorus from neighbouring ponds. Once you hear that, it's over.

Here in no. in. we had 2 days where it didn't drop below freezing then 2 days below freezing saw ran good but when I started boiling it it had a off smell so I boiled a couple of qts. and it definitely had an off taste. That's when I quit .
