View Full Version : How to prevent splashing when pouring into flat filter?

I have always used a cone filter canner, but decided to try a flat filter canner this year. But when I pour my syrup from the finishing pan into the flat filter canner the syrup tends to splash right back at my face until there is an inch or so of syrup on top of the filters. Other than pouring slower, is there a trick to keep it from splashing?

This is what I came up with before the start of the season and it works awesome! That is a 20 quart stock pot I adjust the density in, set it on the shelf and let her fly.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190324/f7411c2efb5dab4504f3321764bf76ea.jpg

This is great! I usually make such a mess doing this.

Yep, me too. I used to "ladle" it in with a one quart Pyrex measuring cup. Worked, but messy and a pita. Now I can control the flow, and actually keep the cover partially on the bottler to keep more heat in. Since I started filtering through pre-filters coming off the evaporator it goes right through the final filtering nice after adjusting density. The stainless valve and bulkhead assembly was like $17 on Amazon or Ebay.

Wnybasman, that’s a great idea. I’m looking to order that SL bottler myself. Do you have the electric or propane model?

Propane. I love the unit!

If the stream of syrup can flow along an object, rather than air, it will enter the finishing pan with less splash. Try holding a spoon at the level of the filters for the syrup to hit first. 19825

I have the same propane unit. Very nice, but if I were doing it again, I'd get the bigger one (fewer refills). This because I bottle at the end of the season (30-40 gals at a time).
