So I started boiling this year on my completely homemade 24x32 and it is working really well. The only complaint I have is knowing how much sap is in the pan. I don't have a float box and don't plan on putting one on. The first boil I was measuring the depth with a ss ruler what a pain in the rear. I was running around 2 inch depth so I didn't scorch my new pan. Then I went to a cork float with a ss tig rod sticking out of it. It worked pretty well until it started absorbing sap... so I am trying to make another float before I spend $90 on a factory made one. So I am trying a ss measuring cup with a thin sheet stick welded to it the thin ss tubing should be here tomorrow. In case this idea fails, what does everyone else use on there homemade rigs to know how much sap is in the pan?1975419755

I dip my skimmer in and see how far up the sap comes. As long as it's more than an inch I'm happy. No more high tech than that.

Can't do that from sitting in a chair with a beer in hand...

If you want an accurate measure rig up a sight tube off your draw off valve some how. Then you'll know at a glance.

So far the new level indicator is working well. Hopefully it continues to do so I have 40 more gallons of sap to boil tomorrow morning.
