Yeah Dave, When the buckets are 1/2 ice and 1/2 liquid I toss the ice. In this case the buckets were froze solid so I saved.

Actually, if you let that ice start to melt, when the ice is about 1/2, toss it then, you will get the same results.

Thaw and test it.....I did(I have 3 buckets) I found the ice traps about .3/4 of a percent of sugar. And I'm sure this can vary some

I've tried this twice (two different years) and both times ended up with 1% sugar content when the thawing process was complete. Just an observation.

When I gathered earlier this year after a good run (I gathered 52 gallons of sap), I pumped the sap into two 32 gallon containers. I boiled two days later after the cold weather set in. There was ice all around the outside of the containers and on the bottom as well. After boiling what was liquid yet, I brought the containers into the garage to thaw and clean. When melted, I had 6.5 gallons of water in each and my sap hydrometer tested the water at 0% sugar. All that ice saved me two + hours of boiling!
