Funny, I actually tried that with an 80 tap 5' lift I added this year. only difference is I still had the stars connected. I figured the vertical or sloped mainline may help if the stars are frozen and serve as a backup so to speak. So when I went to check on it, it was working however not efficiently. The sap was falling back down, or slipping past the air bubble it's trying to ride up on making it back up slightly. It was moving sap bit I didn't feel it was as effective.
Now I didn't mess around with trying, but I believe if I were to have replaced that vertical portion with 1/2" mainline it would have worked better since the internal diameteis smaller.

I haven't had this running yet , but if it does not work I will replace it with 2 stars . I have 300 taps on this one and 200 on another . Time will tell .
Thank you for the reply

I believe I read in the past that each leg of a star fitting is good for 15 taps, thus a 300 will need 20 legs, maybe 3 stars @ 6 each and a 4 way star.. Someone can correct me if I am wrong, my memory on that is somewhat foggy.

dave, i believe it's 10 taps per line on the star- 6 way star is 60 taps and 4 is 40. usually i'll try for 50 per 6 way star to accommodate sap or air volume.

The sap ladder study that was done by OMSPA 10+ years ago tested that type of ladder and found it didn't work well. The spider ladders or one/two pipe vertical ladders worked better.
I quickly tried to find the study but couldn't locate it.

Thought I'd post a pic of what I've got going with the new vac system. I too, have no ladder.
The pump is 75 ft away from the sugar house in the wood shop. Fired up the pump yesterday and had 28" at the releaser and 27.5 at the booster.
Distance from booster to sugar house releaser is 110 ft rise is about 25'. Coming out of the booster I have a 1" dry line with two 5/16" wet lines - one at the bottom, the second approx 3" up from the bottom. The dry line is about 2/3 of the way up. To start there will be 200-220 taps on this setup with another 130 or so, not far away back further in the woods.
I plan to tap later this week and am anxious to see how it works out. Any comments?

I wish i could locate that whole study on sap ladders. I read this years ago when i decided on my sap ladder construction. It was a good read and would like to see it again if anyone could post a link.
