Tapping in SE KY has begun this week. The weather looks good over the next few days. I hope everyone has a great season!

I hope you have a good season. I plan on tapping towards the end of the week. Hopefully the weather will be better than it has been.

Was hoping some of this rain /40-degree temperature would cause some flow (after the recent cooler weather), I have three 3/16's runs in my woods, and they have barely given me a drip this week.

The one tree beside my house / the only one on a bucket is the only one giving me any sap lol.

Well, I’ve been wondering if they would run any. I’ve ran some new woods with the 3/16 tubing this year and will tap this week. Tomorrow, I’m going to start converting my best woods to the 3/16 tubing. These woods have done good in the past. There is a lot of drop from the top to the bottom of the hollow, so it should do real good with the 3/16. Last year I tapped on the 13th of Jan.

It's been slow going here, only collected 1-1/4 gallon over the past two days. I do have one tree that was my best producer last year (averaged about 2 gallons a day), I have gotten a gallon from it and as of yesterday it was still flowing.

We started tapping 1/8/19....We expected to see more sap, but trees are acting oddly. We tap on 2 separate farms. We collected 44 gallons from 48 taps at one farm, and only 12 gallons from 60 taps at the other on 1/10. We hoped the trees would be running today, but not enough to collect. Is this odd?

We tapped about half of our trees last night in northern ky. We will plan on tapping the rest after this weekend's hard freeze. Good luck everyone! We are trying a new method of collecting this year so I really hope to come away this year with even more syrup. We used to hang milk jugs but sometimes they would blow off or be overflowing. This year we bought some tubing and I've been getting free foodgrade buckets from the local krogers bakery dept so the tubing runs directly to the buckets. We're hoping to eliminate lost sap...time will tell:)

Flow has been spotty here in SE KY. Using buckets has been slow for those that are using them. For those that are on tubing, especially 3/16, for the most part flow has been good. The freeze this past weekend caused things to stop but hopefully this warm day or two will allow things to pick up.

We are tapping Black Walnuts and Butternuts as an experiment in Pike County, KY. Didn't have enough time this year to get my trees identified and tubing ran for the Maples. We are going to try next year.

Keep us updated on your sap flow and syrup. I know of a few people in Letcher and Floyd Counties that are tapping walnut. If you're on Facebook, check out the Kentucky Maple Syrup Association page. Happy sugaring!

I made the switch to tubing and buckets about 4 years ago. You definitely will collect more sap but the coons really like to play in the buckets. Sometimes they even turn them over.

We were able to get 97 maple taps this year in Pike County, KY. Collected 155 gallons this Monday and Tuesday. 87 are on 3/16 gravity and 10 bags.

Not sure how many of you know about saptapapps.com. I was introduced to this page a couple weeks ago and love the tools. It has a flowcaster app, and a log app for logging your sap collections. There is also a section to let you see sap collecting activity on a world map from other members.

Also, If you live in Kentucky please check out The Kentucky Maple Syrup Association. The Maple industry is growing in Kentucky and the KMSA is a great way to keep up to date with whats happening in Kentucky maple.

Not a Kentuckian , but an intruder to the KY thread. Welcome to the site and thanks for the app info. I put in 16 taps Monday. Checked 4 of them and had right at 5 gallons on Tuesday. Hoping for epic flow starting tomorrow. Thoughts??

So what do you do when your trees are froze?

Check out a new website for sugarmakers. I just got done checking out saptapapps.com. This is a really cool app and can be personalized. It has a lot of useful content and a place to keep a record of your sap collections. High would encourage everyone to use it. Thanks James Sword for recommending it, it is defiantly worth the time to check out.

It was the first thing I search for when started tapping last year. Great for logging your sap and to see what others are doing around you

Should I be worried about all these warm temps? I would be disappointed if the season ended this soon...

I certainly am. Bet its gonna be a short one. Great flow the last couple of days.

I don't think we're at the end of the season. I've had some great runs the last few days. Saw flow will probably stop for a few days and then once we get back into the 20/40 temperatures the flow will start again.

How is everyone's sugar content this year? Mine has run between 1.0 and 1.4. According to my records, much lower than last year.

I didn't measure it but , mine seems to be pretty good or at least the amount of finished syrup exceeded my expectations.

esetter, I think things are slowly coming to an end, if it hasn't already for me.

Looks like the 2019 maple season is finished or nearly finished. I pulled our taps yesterday. I'm hearing that others across the SE portion of KY completing their last evaporation or have already cleaned things up for the year.

Trees are budded out here.
