I just wanted to show this to those of you that use oil burners and ask for your opinions on if it looks to be burning properly. I just am not sure if that is what I should be expecting for flame size and time to boil etc....

Details:

2x6 Smoky Lake Raised Flue pans
Carlin 301 CRD
3.0gph 60 degree nozzle
10mins 30 seconds to come to a full boil 1.5" deep with water.

Video clip of the burner lighting up.

Thanks!

Seems okay to me but I am new to oil as well. The flames don't look like they are impinging on any surface which is good. How does it boil...are you happy with it? Curious, what size nozzle do you have? My 2x6 with SL raised flue pans has a Carlin 102 with a 3.5gph nozzle. I haven't boiled sap on it yet but it boils nicely.

Typically the 301 Carlin is used with a nozzle from 4-7 gph. I haven't heard of anyone using a 3.0 with it. I used the 4.0 on my 2x8 the past 2 seasons.

The nozzle im using is the one it came with, I bought a brand new nozzle just to swap out the old one and just stuck with that.

We have a SL 2x8 with a 301crd 4.0 70° nozzle. We are having problems with the flame burning to the right of the evaporator. We can not get it center at all.19102

Does it affect your boil?

Yes it affects the boil. Only the whole right side of the evaporator is boiling. If look in the picture you can see the right side is black and the left is not.

Jetdoc how is your flame retention ring, could it be tweaked? any of the fins bent?

Everything is good. I was on the phone with Carlin while we made adjustments to burner and nothing seem to help. They are stumped at this point and are trying to figure out what to do next. We have sent them videos upon videos. With pictures also. So frustrated with it.

I see in the video you had the arch with fire brick did you cover the with ceramic blanket? if not that will slow your time to boil a fair amount having to heat all the brick

Only thing I could think of is the combustion head assembly sounds bent. Did you change the nozzle? Maybe a clog in it thats causing the mist to atomize the spray in a certain direction? Very strange. I hope you get it figured out.

We tried different nozzles. Jim from SL has been very helpful and I thank him for that. Also Carlin has been very helpful also.

Yes its been all covered with fire blanket, that was just me testing it out to make sure it was working.

Well we are waiting for a new oil burner to show up from Carlin. I hope this solves the problem. It should be here in the next day or two. Had my supplier look at it when he dropped off some supplies and agreed with me that it's putting the flame to far to the right. For awhile I thought that maybe I was just seeing things.

Well we put in the burner and was no help. The flame still burns to the left. The only way to center it is by shimming the left side of the mounting plate 1/4" and a 3.50 gph hollow 60° nozzle. It's still not right and not sure what to do next. Heus how's your flame in your 2x8? Is it center? Do you have any pics s of it on?

I don't have the arch anymore I went back to wood. To be honest I never once looked at the flame except through the sight hole in the front. It boiled evenly though. The face of your arch must not be perpendicular to the sides if you have to shim the burner?

This is disappointing. I can't believe the front of the arch could be out of square. There has to be an explanation. Does the new burner have that angled shroud piece over the blower blades?

Yes it has it also. Should hear something back this week on this.

What size burner tube does your 301 have? This burner can be ordered with either a 3.25" tube for 3 to 6 gph firing rate or 3.5" burner tube for 4 to 7 gph.
Your firing rate is right at the cutoff for the big tube. Too big of a tube will make the flame ball unpredictable.

3.25 tube 6 inches long with a 3.5 gph nozzle in it now. it had a 4.0 gph

Heus, why did you give up on the fuel oil?

Doing a major downsizing. 1000 down to 250 taps. Got rid of the 600 gph ro so had to go back to wood. However, I am now getting a small ro so I should have kept the oil arch! A fellow Maple Trader has it now.
