slightly silly question. just cut bricks to make em fit is easier. slightly important question, what would clearances to combustibles be for an arch that is firebrick and mortared over ceramic blanket insulation? thanks!

Basically you want to line the firebox with ceramic blanket then cover the blanket with bricks up to the rails. You can use insulation board instead of the blanket if you want. I find the ceramic blanket easier to work with. Cut the bricks to fit. You want to use refractory cement, not mortar to cement the bricks in place. You want to leave about a 1/2" of space between the bottom of the pan and the top of the bricks at the ramp and beyond. At the stack taper the bricks down and leave enough space for the smoke to exit. The entire inside of the arch needs to be insulated and bricked for the best protection and heat retention. You can use vermiculite as a filler between the ramp and smoke stack. Cover the vermiculite with bricks or refractory cement.
