Planning on 50 buckets this year. What is a good sustainable rule of thumb for taps per inch DBH?

8" to 18" dbh use 1 tap, 18" and up use 2 taps.

I believe that you can find additional information at Proctor Maple Research Center website

Thanks Matt
That sounds reasonable. I will check out that site as well.

I put one tap per tree from 8" up. When I can wrap my arms around the tree at BH and not touch my fingers it will get 2 taps. There are exceptions if the tree is a cull. I move the location of the tap around the tree and up or down from the previous hole too.

The 8" DBH starting size is using 5/16" taps. If I were to use 7/16" taps, which I wouldn't, I would start at 12" DBH.

I am a tree hugger too. 8" to touching my hands is one, and not being able to touch my hands is two taps.
