Greetings,

I'm working on insulating a Leader Half Pint using fire brick which I plan to mortar in place. Per recommendations I also have 1" arch board from Bascom's to put behind the bricks. Is it recommended to put a skim coat of mortar on the steel of the arch to cement the arch board in place? Or do you just let the arch board float and cement the fire brick to the arch board? Or does it not matter!? Thanks for your help.

In this video they don't seem to cement the arch board to the side of the arch.. they do cement the brick to the Arch board, though. Don't know why though.

Hope this helps.

Think about caulking the sheet metal seams with RTV heat resistance caulk, then install arch board. I don't know why you couldn't use RTV on the install of the board. Was on my list to do today. :)

Thanks for the video, Paul. That was helpful. I went ahead and put the board in dry. It was easy enough to get a friction fit so all the pieces stay put without any adhesive. RTV would have been a good idea. But I don't have any handy.

I'm going to have to rebuild the fire grate for the arch on account of using board in addition to bricks. The grate won't fit due the board taking up a couple extra inches of width. But from what I've read, the use of the arch board will be worth the hassle with the increased efficiency and lower surface temp of the arch. I'll wait till I have all the bricks in before I measure for a new grate.

Thanks again.
