I have done some research on the forum reference using a 15.5 gallon sankey style keg for short term storage of finished syrup. I am a small producer and wondered about the feasibility of or ease of using kegs over a smaller SS drum. I wondered about the placement of the center bung over one that is located off center.

I don't but several producers use beer kegs. I think many cut the fitting off and weld on a more user friendly type, some make them a Tri clamp style.

Don’t need to change anything. 2” triclamp cap can be put right on. You can buy special gaskets with only one ridge or use a silicone gasket with both ridges.

I have a fellow producer that I have sold beer kegs to that has Jim from Smokey Lake weld sanitary fittings on them. They cut them down so you can stack the drums without interference from the bung. He has about 40 kegs and he hot pack then for long term storage. He uses clamps and covers No valves.

YUP I get kegs all the time at the scrap yard and I have a clear conscious.

I use beer kegs for long term storage. The ones that I have can't be stacked and the bung is on the side which is a PITA. I've never had a problem with spoilage with them and will continue to use them until I can upgrade to something more user friendly.

We use 5,7.75,and 15.5 gallon kegs for long term storage, they work great , the best thing is both ends are rounded so they empty completely and are very easy to wash

Are they the sankey style and/or the pepsi style pop syrup kegs?

Maple River Sorry for the misunderstanding I read the thread heading and then saw you converted the conversation to soda syrup storage containers. I have used that style tank and didnt like the odd ball fittings and inside flip top opening. When hot packed and cooling process they pulled in outside air.

We called them Cornelius tanks. I ran across about 35 of them in a scrap yard and picked them up cheap. I didn't use them and put an add in the paper and beer guys were fighting over them.

I was asking a question about the 5, 7.75 gallon kegs Windy Acres was using, I wans't aware of kegs that small other than the corny kegs.

The 5 and 7.75 have the same fitting as the 15.5, we have had great luck with the beer kegs

I'm looking to hot pack in stainless and move away from the plastic 5g barrels I'm using now.

I built a dispenser for these kegs that I posted here: http://mapletrader.com/community/showthread.php?38383-Syrup-keg-dispenser&p=415760#post415760

But I can't post my pictures....

I did several of these this year. You need to remove the sanky valve and cut down the neck so you can weld a tri clamp ferrel on. The SS tube on the ferrel slides inside the neck on the barrel. It helps if you can cut it down to within 1/2 inch or less to the top of the barrel so the ferrel can rest on the lip inside. It is best if welded there inside if possible. Smoky Lake has the fittings on their website.

You don't need to cut and weld anything. Just get these gaskets: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07V2KMCLH?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details&th=1

One side is flat and the other side has the lip to match a 2" sanitary cap.

That would be amazing. I think I've reached my limit of dropping grades in plastic.

I have a few breweries in my area (lucky me). Did you reach out to them to see what they had or did the one by you post that they had used kegs for sale? How much did you pay if you don't mind me asking.

Also, the way around the posting pics is to share a link from your Google Photos folder or whatever phot app you use. I'm very interested in the dispenser you fabricated.

Thanks for the responses, btw!

I just searched Craigs list and Marketplace to find mine. For the 13.2 or 15.5 gallon, I payed $40 to $5 apiece.

Woodsville, did you search the classifieds on here? There was some posted for sale a while back.

I explored CL and EBay, but it hadn't occurred to me to check the classifieds here or Marketplace. Good info, thanks.

They can go quickly, I had one ad I stumbled on that had 5-5 gallon and 7 13 to 15 gallons kegs, I bought them all.

I'm already finding that, but I have a couple of leads going. I'm on it!

I found a brewery selling them for $25 each, clean and sanitized. I bought 10 and they cut me a deal.

Paul's Sugarhouse in Williamsburg has a bunch of kegs; all different sizes. I just spoke to him and his wife yesterday at our sugarshack. I may get a couple of 15 gallon ones from him as well. Of course, I'll have to make an adapter for dispensing one of those bigger kegs. Fortunately I designed it so this was easily doable. ;)

I spoke to Peter Gregg yesterday as he came out to visit our sugar shack on his way to the Mass Maple Producer's summer picnic. I talked to him about the picture posting issue and he told me that they needed to install the more recent platform for the site. Some guy in Utah is supposed to do it(?), but he didn't have a time frame for me. He mentioned that I could post it on the Maple Trader FB page, but when I look at that it's really just classifieds, not really forums and it's not like I have them for sale, I just wanted to share what I did if it's helpful to others. I stressed to him the importance of keeping this site up-to-date. This place has been a wealth of knowledge to me and I assume others.

Glad to hear that you were able to find some kegs. Seems like Peter Greg doesn’t really have a lot of interest in keeping this forum alive and going other than owning it. Which is really too bad.

I don't know. It seemed like he was waiting for them not that he wasn't trying to get it updated...

I imagine if a bunch of us e-mailed him directly and voiced our concerns maybe he would push it more?
