I see in the H2O catalog they are selling a kit that is supposed to "clean" the sap to eliminate syrup off flavors. It is a series of filters and a pump that sprays the sap back into the tank. Does anybody know anything about this or how well it works? What kind of off flavor does it take out?

Where in the catalog are you seeing these? I looked through the catalog and didn't see anything like that except a UV system but it doesn't mention off flavored syrup.

2018 H2O catalog page 56-57. I believe the device in question is to help reduce buddy flavor.

There is no name. http://h2oinnovation.net/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/ClientEN_18_LR.pdf Page 57. It is essentially a SS filter housing and a sprayer assembly that is mounted on top of a tank.

We've not tried it. We always stop if/when we hit buddy off-flavor. Usually by the time we get there the flows are slowing and we're ready to be done.

There are some areas of Quebec that seem to suffer from very serious buddy syrup issues. The snow and cold holds on late, and since budbreak is associated with both temperature and daylength, by the time they hit 50-75% of their season, they hit buddy syrup -- so a good percentage of some producers crop can be buddy. They've tried to develop some remediation methods there with some success. Usually these are a combination of spraying/filtering sap/rediluted syrup, and reboiling. Time will tell I suppose.

Usually by the time my trees start running good it's already starting to turn buddy.

It is part of the overall coding system for maple syrup used in Quebec. VR or check-marks are fault codes. The V or check indicates a flavor default, the number corresponds to the type of default.

VR4 = flavor default, non-identified
VR5 = flavor default, buddy
