I have been only bottling in pint and quart jars forever, filling to 1/2” or less from the lid. Again this is always given away so I don’t really care if a pint is 16 or 17 ounces. I always try to have minimal headspace.
Well I came by 4 dozen 12 ounce containers and I’m wondering how far do I fill the neck? I saw this picture on Craigslist along with other similar ones. Is this normal? Can I see what you guys are doing please. 18581

I fill mine full to about a quarter inch from the top with 190° syrup, when it cools it will drop about 1".
I get a premium for my syrup so I want them to look full. Your giving yours away so it may not matter to you.

I always wondered if more air space would invite spoilage/ contamination.

That area is under vacuum and cant cause spoilage because its a sanitary as the rest of the contents. I fill mine to the very top and screw the cap on. I want syrup ion the neck as high as possible because it looks nice.

I do the same and when it cools the syrup level does drop about 3/4 to 1 inch depending on the size of the bottle.

I know having that little bit of extra space in the bottle helps reveal the viscosity of the syrup when someone gives it a little shake..not that it matters. But I see most people doing that when I hand them a jar of my syrup, typically comparing it to that toxic aunt jamima crud.
