Has anyone installed a float valve on a Mason Hobby XL pan?

I had one. Bill Mason installed it. Good craftsmanship but it only worked well on one side. Because the float was reversible to the other side to reverse flow, the inlet was pretty far from the front of the pan on one side. In that configuration you wind up with a whole channel that never boils. Personally I had better results with manual feed. Just keep an eye on it.

Does it connect to the thermometer ports?

No, but I did do that with a homemade float box.
