One option would be to replace each year. They need to be clean and dry for storage. Plastic bag with small vent hole might work. Double check when you go to use it next season. Sniff test and syrup flavor checks before and after will confirm you have done a good job keeping it for another year.

After cleaning with hot water only, let it air dry completely. Once it is dry, I put it in the plastic bag my pre-filters came in. It lays flat on the shelf with the end of the bag open. The plastic just keeps the dust off.

How about dedicating a brand new snap lid 5 gallon bucket to this Icon of the filtering world and place some rice in a separate open container so they don't stick together and store it anywhere.

I make sure it's nice and dry and then I'll store it in the plaatic bag it came in, or something similar if I lost that bag. I buy a new one the following season, but keep the old one for the pour-off container. I filter it straight off the stove and then use the new filter for the final filtering right before bottling. So I only use them for 2 seasons at most. They're cheap enough in my mind to just replace them regularly.
