I have a question about using DE
I have never used it, I filter with cone felt filters
would using DE help?
If yes most of my days end with 7 or 8 litres of syrup
How much DE would I put in for that?

I don't think you can use DE without a press.

Yes you can and it does help. I started using it in my draw off tank and spatulating it with a cordless drill and food grade paint mixer and then pumping it onto my flat filter. I make sure the syrup is as hot as possible and get it to the filter as fast as possible. It makes filtering way better. Once it is in place in the cone filter let it sit and walk away. Fill to the top and be patient.

I didn't know that there was such a thing as a food grade paint mixer. That's good to know in case I need to mix up some edible paint.

Russ now that they took the lead out kids don't like to eat it anymore. There is a surplus of food grade paint supplies.

To answer your question on how much to use, you need to experiment. Try 1/2 cup in the first batch, have the syrup at 200 F+ and see how it goes. The DE must be food grade, best to get it from a maple dealer, Amazon and others have food grade that is too fine and it plugs the filter rather than helps. Mix it well, then pour the syrup/DE mixture into the cone. Find ways to help keep it hot while filtering.
As the season gets later you often need more DE. If the 1/2 cup works like magic, you can try 1/3 cup next time, that might also be good.
You still want some pre-filters, in the cone, if you have been using 3, try just 2.
Have fun.
One place to buy smaller quantities of DE is from The Maple Guys, our founder and previous owner. Or see if a local larger producer will sell you a quart or so full of it or so worth, or maybe 5# if they can weigh it. If you buy like that have a good food grade plastic bag or large mouth container to put it in.

True. The real smart move is the cordless version. I searched and searched for a food grade extension cord and eventually gave up on the whole project.
