View Full Version : how hot should main pump motor be?

Fired up my new homebuilt RO for the first time tonight. Having a few problems, one of which is that I suspect that the motor (3/4HP running a procon 240GPH pump) is overheating. How hot should it be? After running for awhile I can barely touch it. Adding to my suspicion is that it won't run for more than a minute without shutting itself off (although I can't rule out improper wiring of the high/low pressure shutoff switches as the culprit there).

I run a 3/4 hp carbonator motor on a procon 240 pump the motor runs fine just warm not hot to the touch.
If this is the first time starting it up with a new motor, it may be the wiring.
My new carbonator motor came wired for 220v and i had to switch the wires around to the 120 volt configuration.

What pressure are you running at?

Running only at 50psi at the moment, so definitely not overdoing it. Just doing the initial membrane flush.
I was wondering about the motor wiring - (this one can go btwn 110 and 220 too) - but I did have an electrician hook that up so was assuming it was ok... maybe not?

Dont run the motor if it gets that hot. Does it trip ? Have it checked again for proper Voltage. No way your motor should be that hot with a 240 GPH procon pump. Even after 5 hours of use, mine is warm but that's it
Good luck.

From the procon pump datasheet a 240 gph pump requires .87 HP at 250 psi. Mine would trip after sometime running above 220 with .75 HP motor. I went to 1 HP and now have no problems. At 50 psi, you may want to check wiring again or maybe coupler connection may be binding?

Update: had the electrician out, he checked wiring over and it was all fine. He thinks I just got a defective motor (he could actually see smoke coming out of it). Got another one ordered so we'll see! Dang I could sure use the RO right now, we are drowning in sap at the moment!

Final update: it was indeed a bad motor. Got a new one, swapped it in today. Crankin' along just fine now!
