Froze solid - First year tapping question

It finally warmed up enough for a little sap to run yesterday but froze solid again last night with the storm coming. I checked a few taps today and a couple had sap frozen around the tap and a little running down the tree. Looking for a cause - Can the sap freezing split the tree around the tap or drilled and drove in too deep of a hole or ?? Using older 7/16 tap - does anyone have a close up pic of how deep the tap should be in?

tree was warm enough for sap to run and actual air temp was to cold,drill 1/2 in deep,thats plenty deep enough
