Hello-
Currently i only have about 40 taps but plan to be somewhere around 75-125 next year. As with most people I really hate filtering through a cone. I have read a lot of people that love daryl 5 inch press. My questions what is the minimum amount of syrup needed to start up the press? Currently i am drawing off about 1-3 gallon of syrup with my continuous flow pan during a boil.
Thanks for the help

You can use only part of the press for a batch. When you are done filtering, run hot sap or hot water thru the press to push out the sweet, then reboil that.

I filtered two different grades separately in consecutive order ( first batch was 1.5 gal of light, then ran 3 gal of darker) wanted them kept separate b/c bottling in glass.
Worked flawlessly ( first time ever using one)18063

You save up your syrup during the season until you want or have time to filter.

Daryl's 5" press is perfect for what you have and it will still be good at 125 taps. However, if you grow to 500+ you will likely want a larger filter press.

The 5 inch would be a good choice. But we filtered syrup with cone filters for 50 years sometimes making 100 gallons + per year.
I do like the powered filter press a lot.

I too would like a filter press as I usually bottle in glass and end up especially towards the end some cloudy syrup. Although this year went exceptionally well with a cone filter and about 5 prefilters. Crystal 18073clear180711807218072

I will add one thing I do now is let my syrup sit in my bucket for a week or two before I finish and bottle it. There will be about 1/2" of nasty sludge at the bottom and I let that go. It has made a huge difference

I do the same thing blaircounty , right now I have several 5 gallon buckets sitting in the sugarhouse . I have the small wesfab filter press , it cuts down on the amount of filter aid used and what is settled down at the bottom is really something .

For a 5" press the amount of syrup that you are drawing off is perfect. I have a 7" Wes Fab that had a hand pump on it. I could do 5 gallons before it pumped too hard to get more syrup through it. I made more syrup than that per boil so I couldn't filter a whole boils worth of syrup without changing papers. I got sick of that quick and put an air powered double diaphragm pump on it.

How much does something like this system cost, me and the guys are getting sick of using the cone filters. When I bought mine (7 inch wefab with brass pump ) I paid $1200 , I think you will find today more in the $1400 range . I also have 16 x 34 propane fired finish rig that also doubles as the filter tank . the 16 x 34 pan was made by Patrick Phaneuf , $400 , bought two 16 inch propane rigs , $100 , bolted them together . pan fits the burners good . Nice stuff in the Maple world today is not cheap . My 7 inch short bank press and rig suit me fine , better than the old way .

I would budget between $800 (hand press) and $2500 (for a top end plastic plate press).

The prices keep going up for sure. I used cone filters 1 season, then flat filters for a few years. Then The Maple Guys (previous owners of this forum) ran a super sale in the spring post season sales most run, they offered a 3 bank Lapierre 7" press with a brass gear pump for $777 when regular prices were in the $1100-1250 range most places. I still have and use it, but it grew up, I bought 2 more sets of plates and when that pump needed to be rebuilt, I instead changed over to an air powered diaphragm pump. One of my better decisions.

We also have a Daryl's Press .....
We love this little rig ......
Just hate so much sugar sand this year!!!! LOL
But we'll make it ......
We have 288 taps ....
We draw off 2 gallons an hour and this press keeps up nicely .....
As Daryl said if you have less syrup .... use less plates ...
It is a bit expensive for a smaller producer .....
However, you can't get more American than this press ....
Made right here in the USA by an American machinist .......
That was our decision point ..... American made!!
It will no doubt last forever!!!

Yes, second this. Letting the syrup sit for a few days before filtering helps a lot.
