Hey All,

I'm reaching out to anyone who has a Phaneuf 2x4 or 2x6 evaporator. Mine is a 2x4 drop flue and last year I got a steam hood and pre-heater from him.

Yesterday we ran all day using good dry hardwood, cut small and fed the fire as per everyone's recommendations. We were only getting approx 20gpm and I expected more, especially with the pre-heater.

I am not using AOF/AUF and my stack length is more than double the arch. My stack temps make me nervous as they will climb to over 1200-1300 degrees.

I was just wondering what anyone else who had an evaporator from Patrick was getting. I was hoping for around 30gpm, maybe slightly higher.

The only thing I am considering is adding more brick on the ramp to force the fire under the flues more and I feel much of the fire is going straight to the back of the arch and up the chimney, but I never got any insight from him on how to brick it beyond the basics.

Any help would be appreciated.

I have a 2x6 with no hood and AUF, I average 33 Imperial gallons (39.6 US) an hour. not sure what type of wood i put in last night but i hit 39 Imperial 47(US) for about 10 minutes.

I fire every 10-12 minutes (small firebox)

I have a flow meter installed on my intake to very flow rates.

Thanks for the reply.

I know the AUF improves things, but so would my pre-heater at some level. I guess I need to add air and see what happens.

Any idea what your stack temps are?

I have a magnet stack thermo that normally reads 650-750

I used to have one of his 2' x 4' drop flues with a very similar setup as yours and got only 22 gph with it. I don't think I could have gotten anymore out of it if I had tried.

Okay. Thanks for the reply. Good to know there isn’t much more I can do.

I'm very similar to what decker wrote. 2x6 drop flue with AUF, no hood. I do fire a bit more often....7 or 8 mins.
