What are some good products to use as defoamer? Veggie oil, organic sunflower oil, or should I just purchase some defoamer from Bascoms? Ive never used the stuff before as there was no need but with this new rig (2x5 flat batch pan and corsair arch from Smoky lake with a blower!) I've GOT to. It boiled over once today. Anyway, what defoamer do you use? Thanks, Ted
I use Safflower oil because it doesn’t add any flavor to the syrup. Sunflower oil also works good but if you have to use much it can add a little flavor to the syrup. You only need to use it a drop or two at a time.

I us Atmos I believe Bascom sells, works great and you only us a few drops no added flavor. We tried a couple others none worked as well. Others all took a lot more to do the same thing

I use Atmos 300. If you sell the syrup you can only use approved defoamers. If organic the list gets real short.

I use the Atmos 300 too. I've used butter and canola oil in the past but someone that is lactose intolerant won't buy your syrup if they know that you used it for a defoamer. The canola oil worked but I had to use more of it than I do the Atmos 300. I believe that organic canola oil is one of the approved defoamers for organic producers.

A little unsalted butter touched to the inside of my pan keeps the foam down.

So if I decide to use either unsalted butter or heavy cream I think the only time that I would ever need it is in my 2 foot by 1 foot propane finishing pan ( that's the only place that I have really seen any problems with foaming)
My question is how much do you use? is there a ratio of droplets of each to the gallon amount or just a trial-and-error thing?

I ordered the organic sunflower oil from Bascoms. I hate to add anything to my syrup but man, something has to happen. Thanks Everyone! Ted

One thing you all are forgetting here is if you sell your syrup you can't use dairy or any allergens. nut base oils.

Okay. Now I'm concerned. Should I just go with Atmos 300? Heck, are there allergies to it? Ted

Safflower oil works ok. I use what CDL sells.

I am concerned about sales, I'm concerned about explainations, I'm concerned about allergies, I'm concerned about labeling, and I don't care for adding ANYTHING to my syrup. That felt good! I gotta do what I gotta do. To utilize my evaporater to it's fullest potential I'll have to use something so organic sunflower oil it is. Ted

My suggestion: If you concerned about sales, look into and use what you feel, best with.
If your concerned about personal health issues. Find something organic. I’m leaning to safflower or sunflower oil.
I’ve read and looked up the ingredients, this is something I personally wouldn’t use.

I have to agree with your opinion of the ingredients in atmos 300. If I can't pronounce the ingredients or have no idea what they are I really don't want to put that in my syrup. I have used Sun flower oil with good results.
